Which type of skip bin do I need?

Choosing the right skip bin begins with assessing the type of waste you need to dispose of, as each skip bin has specific allowances. Here’s a breakdown:

General Waste Skip Bin: Ideal for general rubbish accumulated over time, including white goods, old toys, furniture, clothing, green waste, and household and electrical items.

Green Waste Skip Bin: Designed for garden waste such as grass, leaves, weeds, bark, shrubs, tree branches, and untreated wood. No other waste is permitted in this bin.

Mixed Waste Skip Bin: Suitable for renovations, allowing the disposal of concrete, bricks, pavers, and green waste.

Concrete/Bricks Skip Bin: Exclusively for concrete, concrete pavers, roof tiles, and bricks. No other waste is allowed.

Soil/Dirt Skip Bin: For disposing of dirt, soil, clay, and sand. No other waste is permitted.

Are there different types of skip bins?

Yes, at Mr. Skip Hire, we typically stock three different types of skip bins:

Marrel Skip Bins: These are the most common type and range in size from 2m³ to 17m³. Some Marrel skip bins come with wheelbarrow access, but it’s best to call and confirm, as not all have this feature.

Hook Lift Skip Bins: Commonly used in commercial settings, these bins are loaded on and off trucks using a hook that rolls the bin into place. Hook lift skip bins feature large rear doors for easy access and are available in various sizes.

Mobile Skip Bins: Ideal for areas that are difficult to access, such as underground parking spaces or narrow driveways. These bins remain on a special trailer, eliminating the need for a permit if placed on council land.

What size of bin does the average household require?

A 3m³, 4m³, or 6m³ skip bin is typically sufficient for an average household undertaking a general clear-out. If you’re unsure, consider that a 3m³ skip bin can hold the equivalent of 12 wheelie bins of waste, while a 4m³ skip bin can accommodate 16 wheelie bins of waste.

How long can I keep a skip bin for?

The typical rental period is between 3 and 7 days. Suppliers can usually extend your rental period if arranged in advance. However, a daily rate may apply for additional days. It’s important to select your rental period carefully to ensure you have enough time to use the skip bin fully.

What happens if I have not finished with the skip bin on collection day?

Contact your supplier as soon as you realize you won’t be finished on time. They can usually arrange for you to keep the skip bin longer at a daily rate. However, if the skip bin is already booked for another job, you may not be able to extend your rental period.

When and how do I pay for the skip bin?

Your payment will be processed immediately upon placing an order on our website. We accept all major credit cards.

Is there anything I can not put in a skip bin?

Hazardous waste cannot be placed inside a skip bin. This includes paints, solvents, liquids, food, decomposed materials, and asbestos. Asbestos removal must be carried out by a specialist, and you are legally required to follow guidelines for the safe disposal of hazardous waste.

Hazardous materials must be handled according to your local council’s regulations.

Additional charges apply for the removal of mattresses, tyres, gas bottles, and batteries. Contact us to determine if your supplier accepts these items and to inquire about any additional fees.

Is there a weight limit for my skip bin?

Yes, there is a weight limit of 150kg per cubic meter for General or Green Waste skip bins. If you exceed this limit, additional charges will apply from your supplier.

There are no weight limits for mixed waste skip bins or for bins designated for concrete, dirt, and soil.

How high can I fill the skip bin?

The waste should not exceed the height of the bin’s sides to prevent the risk of debris falling out while stationary or in transit. Pack your skip bin carefully, starting with flat items like old doors. Place these flat items at the base of the skip bin first.

Can I put asbestos in a skip bin?

No, asbestos must be disposed of in a specialized asbestos bin.

Can I put insulation in the skip bin?

Yes, if the insulation contains asbestos, it must be treated the same way as asbestos. You will need to book your skip bin through our office rather than the website.

What can I do if someone puts waste in my skip bin?

Unfortunately, it is your responsibility to ensure that improper use does not occur once the skip bin is delivered. We cannot take any responsibility for misuse. To prevent this, consider placing your skip bin on your property rather than on the nature strip or other public areas.

Can I have a skip bin placed on the nature strip outside my property?

A bin placed on the nature strip requires a council permit. Contact the staff at Mr. Skip Hire for more information on council permit requirements. The skip bin must not block pedestrian access or utility points. Inform your neighbors in advance that you have ordered a skip bin to ensure no vehicles obstruct the delivery. If the driver cannot safely gain access, they may leave and return later, which could incur an additional charge.

Can I have the skip bin placed on the road?

Bins cannot be placed on main roads and clearways, depending on council road regulations. Placing a bin on the road will require a council permit. Contact Mr. Skip Hire to clarify the requirements.

Can I have the skip bin in my driveway?

Your driveway must be at least 3 meters wide and easily accessible for a truck.

Be aware that low-hanging branches or nearby power lines can hinder access. If you anticipate any issues, contact your supplier directly. They will try to assist by providing a smaller truck for delivery if possible.

Can I order a skip bin to be delivered at a specific time?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. However, most suppliers will do their best to accommodate your request if you call ahead of time and ask.

Can suppliers collect skip bins early?

Yes, they can. If you call your supplier as soon as you’ve filled your skip bin, they will typically do their best to pick it up as soon as possible.

Is there a charge if I need to cancel my order?

If you cancel at least 3 days before your bin is scheduled for delivery, there is no charge. If you cancel less than 3 days prior, a fee of 10% of the total amount will be applied. Cancelling on the delivery day will incur a 20% charge of the total amount.

You may cancel or change your order no later than 3 business days before your bin is delivered. If you cancel after this period, a cancellation fee of 10% of the total amount will be charged. Cancelling on the delivery day will result in a 20% charge of the total amount.

When you cancel, you will be refunded the original amount minus the cancellation fee.

What happens to my waste after it is collected?

Upon collection, approximately 80% of your waste is transferred to a waste transfer station for recycling. Here, it is carefully sorted and separated to ensure that any reusable materials are set aside.

All recyclable materials are then processed to create new raw materials, such as newspaper and wood chips.

Only about 20% of the waste we collect ends up in landfill. We strive to minimize landfill waste, making recycling a crucial part of our process.
